Dear U.S. Personal tax return filers 1040/1040NR,
This is your official reminder of the next 2024 U.S. tax return filing deadline, which falls on 15th October 2025.
This deadline applies to taxpayers who filed for an extension on 15th April 2025 (or 16th June 2025 for those living abroad) using Form 4868.
What if You’re Still Not Ready?
If you are still gathering documents or struggling to finalize your Form 1040 or 1040NR, and you live outside the United States, you can request your U.S. tax preparer to apply for an additional discretionary extension until 15th December 2025.
Please note: While the extension allows you extra time to file, any taxes owed should have been paid by 15th April 2025 to avoid penalties and interest.
FBAR Filing Deadline (Foreign Bank Account Reporting)
The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is due annually by 15th April following the tax year.
However, if you miss this date, there is an automatic extension until 15th October 2025 — no separate request is needed.
For details on FBAR filing rules and penalties, read our dedicated blog on FBAR Filing Requirements.

Special Notes for U.S. Citizens & Green Card Holders in the U.K.
If you are a U.S. citizen, green card holder, or long-term U.S. resident living in the U.K., you may also be filing a U.K. Self-Assessment return.
The U.K. personal tax filing deadline for the 2024/25 tax year is 31st October 2025 [Paper postal filing] and 31st Jan 2026 [Electronic filing].
If you are reporting foreign tax credits on Form 1116 with your U.S. return, we strongly recommend filing early.
Ensure your U.K. taxes are paid before 31st December 2025 so these UK taxes or other country foreign taxes can be claimed correctly as foreign tax credits on your 2025 1040 Federal return.
The above steps ensure compliance with both IRS and HMRC requirements.
ITIN for Spouse of U.S. Citizen
If you are filing jointly and your spouse needs an ITIN, make sure to:
File your ITIN application (Form W-7) together with your 1040 tax return [This can be for any tax year 2024 or prior year], If you have already filed the 1040 tax return filing status as Single, you have an option to amend the tax return to filing status as Married Filing Jointly and apply for an ITIN for your foreign country resident spouse.
Submit the package before the 15th of October 2025 or with a further extended deadline of 15th Dec 2025.
Keep safe proof of mailing for your records.
ITIN Approval and Refund Processing Time
The IRS continues to experience delays in ITIN approvals and refund processing.
Typically, ITIN applications take 8–12 weeks.
Refund processing time is estimated at 3 to 6 months from approval of the ITIN. It may take even longer if any issue with the 1040 tax return reporting or if valid federal withheld tax proof [i.e., W2, 1099] is not enclosed with the 1040 tax return.
Conclusion:
The 15th October 2025 deadline is the last chance for taxpayers with an extension to submit their 2024 tax returns. Don’t wait until the last moment — late filing can lead to penalties, refund delays, and compliance issues. You can find out more about deadlines during the year here. Providing proof of U.S. residency is a critical step when applying for an ITIN for dependents. Accurate documentation ensures that your ITIN application is processed smoothly and that you qualify for tax benefits.
