If you sent in the ITIN application in the 2022 calendar year and still have not received an update or approval you are not the only one many foreign persons who submitted the ITIN application in the 2022 year have faced significant delays in receiving approval response from ITIN operation office.
What is the Normal ITIN application processing time?
The normal ITIN application processing time for the ITIN application is around 4-6 weeks with a postal transit time for international applicants for the approval letter [Notice 565] or [Notice 566] for more information requests or for the rejection letter [Notice 567] is received with an estimated time of 8-10 weeks.
What is the current ITIN application processing time in 2022?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic time, there has been a significant backlog of ITIN applications not been processed yet and the current ITIN processing time is over 3 or 4 months on average. This is the same timeline even if the application was submitted by the applicant in the USA or from any other foreign destination.
How to check the status of the ITIN application submitted?
Option 1 – If you submitted the application and original passport directly to the ITIN office
You can call the ITIN operation office on this number. NOTE: It's very difficult to get through this phone line, if you are lucky that’s great news.
You can call the IRS toll-free at +1 800-829-1040 if you are in the United States or +1 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number) if you are outside the United States.
Option 2 – If you submitted the application via one of the certified Acceptance Agents and the ITIN approval delay is over 4 months from the time the application was mailed out.
You can then request your certified Acceptance agent who assisted with the ITIN application to check the status on your behalf. Please note the Certified Acceptance agent can only be authorized to check the ITIN application status on your behalf if this team submitted and signed off the Acceptance Agent section on Form W7
What if my ITIN application is rejected because I did not send in a valid certified passport from a certified acceptance agent?
You need to send in a new application again as there is no appeal for the ITIN application which was rejected by the ITIN operation office.
