Change of Mailing Address Notification to IRS: Form 8822 Guide

If you have moved home or to a new country it is important you notify the IRS of your new address.

Why notification of a new address is important?

  1. If you have filed your 1040 or 1040NR tax return and IRS notices correspondence would land up in the wrong mailing address

  2. If you are expecting a refund check, the refund check could go missing.

  3. If you have an ITIN as a foreign person, your renewal notice or CP48 which is normally issued for ITIN Renewal would be missed for timely renewal.

What you need to do to notify the IRS office of your new address.

Here are 3 simple steps to process

Step 1 – To download the Notification Form 8822 from IRS website

Step 2 – Complete the Form 8822

Complete part one of Form 8822 for the name, SSN, or ITIN number of your old and new address, and complete part two of Form 8822 with your signature.

Step 3 – Mailing the Signed Form 8822 to I.R.S.
