This information is helpful for Foreign persons who filed their 1040NR Federal tax return with an ITIN application, For some reason the ITIN application gets ITIN rejected and a temporary TIN number was allocated to the 1040NR tax filer. With the ITIN Rejection if you have now resubmitted the new application via an IRS-approved acceptance agent [CAA] and the ITIN is approved successfully, You hoping the refund would be released soon or the 1040NR tax return will be processed this time without any issue. However, after a long wait, you receive a letter from IRS and which turns out to be a CP54B Notice asking for more information.

What is the CP54B Notice?

This notice is sent out by the IRS to the 1040NR/1040 tax filers and the 1040NR tax return shows a different name and/or ID number from the information IRS has for your account. This CP54B notice is sent out to the taxpayer to provide more re-confirmation on the accuracy of the name SSN/ITIN to us in order to mail out the taxpayer refund or process the tax return.

Action required by taxpayer who received this CP54B Notice.

  • Review your identifying information shown on this notice and compare it to your most recent social security card or CP565 Notice if you receive an ITIN Number.

  • Complete the CP54 response form to explain the discrepancies in the name, address, or number.

  • Include copies of documents [CP565 ITIN Approval notice/SSN Card copy or Passport Copy to substantiate your name and identifying number.

What do you need to do if you have a Valid SSN if discrepancies in the information on the CP54B notice?

  • Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to update your records if you have an SSN and any of the following occurred:

    • you recently married and are using your spouse’s last name and you did not contact SSA to update your records,

    • you legally changed your name without contacting SSA to update your records, or

    • your social security number and/or name are different from when you received your social security number.

What do you need to do if you have a Valid ITIN if discrepancies in the information on the CP54B notice?

  • Contact the IRS, ITIN Operation, to update your records if you have an ITIN and any of the following occurred:

    • you recently married and are using your spouse’s last name and you did not contact IRS to update your records,

    • you legally changed your name without contacting IRS to update your records, or

    • your ITIN and/or name are different from when you received your CP565, ITIN Assignment Letter.

What happens after you complete the Notice CP54 Notice and mailed it back to the IRS office?

Once IRS receives your response form and verifies the information you provided, you should receive your refund in 4 to 6 weeks, if the name and ID number you provided match IRS records. If you don’t hear from IRS after 6 weeks, you can check the status of your refund on Where’s My Refund?
