US Tax Return Filing Deadline Key Dates

For US Citizens and Greencard holders and Foreign Persons with US-based income reporting it is another year with your US Federal and state tax return filing obligation.


KEY DATES FOR FILING YOUR 2022 US TAX RETURN AND COMPLIANCE FORMS


18th April 2023 – Initial 1040 Federal tax filing deadline date for US Citizens and residents living in the United States, if the extension is not filed.


15th June 2023 – Initial 1040/1040NR Federal tax filing deadline date for US Citizens, Greencard holders, and foreign persons living outside of the United States, if the extension is not filed.


15th October 2023 – If the taxpayers or their CPA have filed an extension Form 4868 for Federal extension then the 1040/1040NR Federal tax filing deadline date for US Citizens, Greencard holders and foreign persons living in the United States or outside of the United States can get the benefit of the additional 6 months extension.


15th December 2023 – If the taxpayers or their CPA have filed an extension Form 4868 for Federal extension and also filed further extension by 15th October 2023 with an additional 2 months extension then this is the final deadline date for filing the 1040 Federal tax return. This extension is only allowed for US Citizens living outside of the United States.


Fincen114/Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR)/FATCA Compliance Forms


The initial filing deadline date is 18th April/15th June and with the extension filing of Form 4868, the filing date is extended to 15th October 2023.

Any US Tax Due as of 18th April 2023 for the 2022 US tax year


Kindly note if any taxes are due its recommend to make an extension payment when Form 4868 is filed this is to avoid Interest charges expected at the rate of 4% on tax due from 18th April 2023 until the time of tax return filing.


Please note for the US Citizen married to a foreign spouse you need to have a valid US Tax ID or ITIN to file your 1040 married filing jointly status. For more information on this please refer to this blog.
